VOLUME X. LENOIR, ST.' C, AUGUST 3 1, 1908. . 3STO. 79. ( The Mayor Stopped the- "Work With His Gun. Stateville Landraifrk. Mr. H. J. Abee was recently elected mayor of West Hickory. A company headed by Mr. Geo. F. Ivey, of Hickory, owned a site in West Hickory on which they pro posed to erect a "picker-stick" for tory. For some reason Mayor Abee didn't want the factory built and after the foundation had been laid the mayor sallied forth with his gun and stopped the work; he also kicked down the portion of the foundation that had been built. The Hickory correspondent of the Charlotte Observer, who furni shes this information, says the mat ter will be aired in a magistrate's court tomorrow and that, mean time, the citizens of West Hickory will ask Mayor Abee to resign. Evidently the mayor doesn't want industrial enterprises in his town, A Tar Heel Made President. Charlotte Observer. Doston, Mass., July 30. The North Caroliua dentists, aided by the other Southern delegates to the annual convention, scored a victory today in the election of Dr. V. E. Turner, of Raleigh, as presideut of the National Dental Association, Dr. Charles Crenshaw, of Atlanta, won second place after a spirited contest. The , 'Solid South" also succeeded a naming a Southern city, Birmingham, for the next convention. Richmond was a Competitor for this honor. Life on tho farm may seem slow, but its about the surest thing on the stage of action. Butterflies Wreck Cars. Rome, Aug., 1. The presence of an unusual numberof white but terflies caused a collision between two tramway cars at Florence at midnight yesterday. The rails were made slippery by hundreds of thousands of the but terfliee falling on on the metals and being crushed by the cars. The car; that collided had the windows broken, many of the passengers were bruised and the drivers were injured. The work of clear ing the line was rendered difficult owing to the appearance of fresh clouds of butterflies. The presence of the swarms of butterflies is attributed to the great heat and to the amouut of electricity in the atmosphere. Burning Oil Well Bcomes Volcano. Tampico, Mexico. Aug. 3. An appeal will be made to the govern ment for aid in fighting the oil fire in the San Geronomo field. A subterranean explositiou has turn ed the burning well into a voicauo with a crater a quarter of a mile wide. Burning streamslof oil are flowing down the sides of the vol cano and there is danger that this may cause forest fires. Meri working the roads on Pads Creek in Wilkes county, had a row and as a result of which, Chas. Nichols is in a critical condition. Nichols and a man named Faw had some words and a few licks, when a friend of Nichols, in order to help him, stiuck at Faw with a shovel, but missed him and hit Nichols on the head, inflicting a bad wound splitting the skull. The Needles in the Boby. Washington Star. There are many records of needles making remarkable journeys through the limbs and bodies of human beings. Once a needle or the pointed end of one gets under the skin it begins to travef and there is no telling where or when it will come to the surface. The death from this cause of a young lady in Warshaw, Ind., has just occurned. Her symptoms just beforo her death, which was quite sudden, were so peculiar that a postmortem examination was made. It showed that death was caused by "leakage of the heart." That organ having beeen punctured by a piece of needle. Frequently in the last few months the young la dy had complained of peculiar pains in different locations, first in the hand, then in the arm, then in the shoulder and finally in the breast, the last a short while be fore her death, thus plainly show ing the course of the needle. When the Ineedle is broken off under the skin the person should keep perfectly still until can be withdrawn. This often has to be done by making an incision and using tweezers. It takes very littie movement of the part affected to cause the little piece of short steel to work its way so tar in that it cannot be found, and then it be gins its tortous journey through the limbs and body, causing vio lent pain as it moves its position, and at times death, as was the sad result in the case above cited. Some politicians are like hogs. You can tell how hungry they are by the size of their squal. Seattle's Uncaged Native Zoo Heattle Post Intelligencer. With bears roving about Ray eaua; with deer scampering along the borders of Lake Washington; with Coyotes yelping over the hills around Faunterloy, and with here and there, in the gulches of the the city's outer edges, a panther or a bobcat to add somewhat more of native grandeur to the scene, it may be said that the city Seattle is fairly well provided with an un caged and untamed menagerie. Few persons would be inclined to believe that Seattle, a city of near ly 300,000 people, provided with nearly every comfort and conven ience a really up to date citizenry could wish, would have within its borders, almost within the glare of electric lights, a native zoo; but it is nevertheless so. Of course citi zens of Seattle who are "perfectly familiar with the quick and sub jstantial growth of this city and section will understand perfectly I how it has happened that these an imals are actually within, or very near, the outer lines of the city. Growth has been so rapid that even the agile and watchful creatures of the forest have not been able to get out of the way, and hence they now find themselves deuizens of an incorporated city, sharing in some measure, the protection of its laws, and at the same time adding some what of wildnass and beauty to city life. It is an unusual distinc tion for a city of Seattle's size and energy to have a native zoo, made up of untamed and uncaged crea tures of the wild, and the city may very properly take some pride in the fact. fmestoffools i What Do You Know About Tools?
